Foundations Episode #18 – Steely Resolve

Foundations Episode #18 – Steely Resolve

Often, when we talk about field procedures and routines, our mind immediately goes to concrete. But steel is equally important in the equation. And while the technologies and procedures for laying out steel has advanced rapidly over the past few decades, so has the complexity of projects. In this episode of Foundations, we’re joined by John Fugera, the newest member of BuildingPoint Florida, to leverage his years of experience while we discuss laying out for steel projects.

Trimble Vico Office R6.5 is Now Available!

Trimble Vico Office R6.5 is Now Available!

The latest release for Vico Office, version R6.5 is now available from Trimble! This new update includes bug fixes and enhancements to integrate the workflows of design/cost/management.

Design Workflows: have been improved via the introduction of rebar takeoff support for Tekla models.  Users can now publish their detailed concrete models into Vico Office and get full quantity analysis and change management capabilities on rebar models.  Additionally, users will be pleased to experience even more 3D performance enhancements to help support the increasingly larger models that come with support of such high volume elements.

Further improvements to support the design workflow include the support of BCF integration for communicating constructibility issues outside of the Vico Office application.

Cost Workflows: have been improved by adding a few new features, including conditional formatting of data and the ability to bring parent hierarchies from a reference estimate.

Both changes will make working in cost planner for long durations easier, as hierarchy adjustments will automate estimate creation and conditional formatting has the ability to draw user’s attention to specific data within the estimate.

Time Planning Workflows: have been improved with some nice new features, including the ability to create tasks without cost components and a significant increase in the amount of production control data to web services for an increased ability to do analytics tracking around install performance data.

Model-based schedules are now easier and quicker to create, with the production control information available to anyone who has a web connection.

See What’s New In Trimble Connect

See What’s New In Trimble Connect

Trimble Connect is an online collaboration environment that allows everyone involved in a project to see the big picture right down to the tiniest detail. Simply put, it allows contractors of all sizes build better. As part of the ongoing process to improve Trimble Connect, several new enhancements and features have been added.

• Option to restrict project invite feature to project administrators only for enhanced security
• Team page user experience improvements
• Create a new project from an existing one as a template for quick project setup, maintaining folder structure standards by work breakdown, settings and team.
• Export project activity to excel. In excel, you can analyze activity graphs by trade, company, activity type and much more…
• Add multiple section planes (up to 8) on models in 3D viewer. Views can be consistently shared across Trimble Connect Web, Desktop and Mobile.
• Search for files inside projects with the option to Download, Add to Release and Add to ToDo
• Share data with any anonymous users with a public link

The Concept Behind Conceptual Estimating

The Concept Behind Conceptual Estimating

In this previous post, we looked at the powerful capabilities behind Trimble Modelogix, a focused and easy-to-use solution for mining and harnessing the immense data within your historical projects and activities.

And while it’s easy to understand that an amazing level of insight exists within this data, the more important question is “How can I leverage this data?” It is this inquiry that Trimble Modelogix was created to answer.

With a fully populated Modelogix instance, you now have the ability to query, slice, dice, and analyze your data in whatever way makes the most sense to you for a particular project. Let’s say your doing a healthcare addition in Fort Lauderdale. This project is being scoped as adding 100 beds and an operating room to the existing campus. With Trimble Modelogix, you can easily gather all of your previous healthcare projects and begin to analyze that data. You can determine a historical (and accurate) cost per bed estimate, as well as accurate cost per operating room figures. Then you can adjust the labor and materials against your historical experience in the Fort Lauderdale area. With Trimble Modelogix, you have the ability to look at your data in way that has never been possible.

And because all of this data is readily available, in real-time, you can even involve owners and additional stakeholders into the process in a live and responsive setting. Allowing them to see how their decisions impact the cost and scale of the proposed project.

Trimble Modelogix gives you the information you need to make your conceptual estimates feasible.

Foundations Episode #17 – Going It Alone

Foundations Episode #17 – Going It Alone

In today’s world, we’ve become accustomed to the idea of instant gratification, and expecting things to just plug in and work. But that expectation hits some snags when it comes to the realities of construction. Often times, the stakes are too high, and the schedules too compressed, to realistically expect to learn something from scratch all by yourself. But, you don’t have to go it alone. In this episode of Foundations, we’re joined by Steve Montgomery of BuildingPoint Northeast, and Robert Beck of BuildingPoint West to tackle this subject and discuss the importance of leveraging local and on-site support partnerships.
